Mapping Impact-Aligned Policies: Lessons from NAB-led projects in LATAM, 10 October 2023, 3pm BST

A key way in which NABs are strengthening their local impact investment markets is by working with local research institutions and advocating for policy reforms to support the enabling environment for impact-driven organisations and investors. By mapping existing policies and legislation that align to the SDGs and other sustainable development considerations, NABs can improve dialogue with government actors, identify regulatory hurdles, and issue action-oriented recommendations. Join us to explore the methods and approaches employed by the Colombia NAB and Central America RABs to foster improved dialogue with respective policy makers and introduce impact-focused policies at the national level.

Introduction to Impact Accounting: the future of impact transparency, 21 September, 2023, 1pm BST

Lack of transparency, consistency, and comparability of corporate sustainability reporting data makes it difficult for investors, companies, governments, consumers, and other stakeholders to integrate social and environmental impact into their decision making. At the same time, society at large is demanding greater impact accountability from companies. The International Foundation for Valuing Impacts (IFVI) was launched to develop and scale a globally applicable open-source methodology for measuring and valuing companies’ social and environmental impacts in monetary terms. Through ongoing testing and increased adoption by companies, investors and the public sector, there is growing evidence that impact accounting is feasible and valuable for informing financial analysis, capital allocation, and decision-making. Join us on September 21st to learn about what impact accounting means for the future of the impact investing community, examples of successful case studies, and how you can be part of the conversation.

Setting Capital Mobilisation Targets: towards a Leaders’ Declaration, 13 September 2023, 1pm BST

As part of the Impact Summit, the GSG is planning to release a Leaders Declaration, which will target governments, regulators, investors, and companies. It will call for (i) a mandatory allocation of 10% of capital to impact. (ii) mandatory impact accounting. Setting capital mobilisation targets can inspire market players to accelerate their transition to an impact economy, but we need your support to ensure that they are grounded in contextual realities.

This session will allow us to continue the conversation started during the Global Leadership Meeting, and explore how NABs could support the Declaration by signing the declaration, and illustrating how this would look like in practice for their ecosystem. We will hear from the experience of the Netherlands NAB in adopting ambitious mobilisation targets, discuss the initial findings obtained by NABs that have attempted to use the strategy tool, as well as challenges encountered.

Mainstreaming impact investing in the pension fund industry: the role of regulation, 9 March 2023, 2pm GMT

Regulation plays an immutable role in facilitating mainstream involvement of pension funds in the impact economy. Clarity on the legality of impact investing is often a key barrier faced by pension funds in investing for impact, while legal incentives are essential to accelerate and mainstream adoption.

In this session, we will explore existing regulations affecting pension fund flows and hear practical strategies about how NABs can encourage the introduction of policies and regulations that create an enabling regulatory environment for impact investing among pension funds. We will also hear from NABs about how they are supporting pension funds navigate rapid changes in the regulatory environment. You will hear concrete examples from the French and UK NABs, and have the opportunity to share your experience with others.

This NAB Dialogue is part of a series exploring how NABs can support the mobilisation of pension fund capital for impact at the different stages of market development that will serve to identify opportunities for collaboration through the pension fund working group.

This session is open to all stakeholders – pension funds, policy makers, market builders interested in growing the involvement of pension funds in the impact economy. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange informally with their peers from other countries before and after the session.

Scaling Outcome-Based Commissioning in Government, February 23, 3pm GMT

Outcomes-based commissioning (OBC) has proven to dramatically improve social and environmental outcomes and the efficiency of public spending in certain policy areas, However, governments around the world still face various barriers (political, technocratic, etc.) to adopt this approach. In this NAB dialogue, we will explore this issue and exchange experiences with policymakers and NAB members from countries where OBC mechanisms were successful or failed to be implemented, and discuss creative solutions to address the incentives and disincentives to adopt and scale them.

Mobilising local pension funds as pioneers: what you need to know, 25 January 2023, 1pm GMT

As we re-convene GSG’s Pension Fund and Impact Investing Working Group, we are kicking off the year with a 3-part NAB Dialogue series exploring how NABs can support the mobilisation of pension fund capital acknowledging that countries are at different stages of market development.

Pension Funds have a key role to play in growing the impact economy, in particular in emerging markets where they represent a large share of the local supply of capital. In many markets however, both nascent and more mature, pension funds are still unaware of, or cautious about their potential to contribute, due to a high level of perceived risk.

How can NABs address these perceived risks head on? What advance information gathering and groundwork can they do to best prepare themselves to engage with pension funds? How can they most effectively approach pension funds and in order to make the case that impact investing is not only desirable, but also feasible?

In this session, we will discuss what information to gather even before approaching pension funds, as well as practices that have proven effective in garnering their initial interest and cooperation. The session will feature learnings from the Collaborative for Frontier Finance (CFF), which has been working with African NABs to develop new financial instruments to facilitate the involvement of pension funds in the impact economy.

This session is open to all stakeholders – pension funds, policy makers, market builders interested in growing the involvement of pension funds in the impact economy. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange informally with their peers from other countries before and after the session.

How can NABs most effectively engage with and influence government? Thursday 27 October 2022, 1pm BST

The public sector has a crucial role to play in driving impact economies, either as a regulator, a market participant or a market builder. As an increasing number of GSG NABs are driving efforts in the policy space, how can they engage with their governments most effectively, building robust relationships and influencing impact policy making? What are the main challenges NABs face and what strategies have proven most efficient to overcome them? In this dialogue, the GSG policy team and a group of NABs will share recommendations, experiences, best practice and lessons learned, seeking to deliver a practical tool and to strengthen a platform for continuous collaboration in the policy space within the GSG community.

Core funding models: How to sustainably fund growing NAB secretariats? Thursday 13 October 2022, 2pm BST

Once established, NABs have to ensure continuous funding for both operational and implementation costs. Developing a funding model that enables NABs to sustainably cover the costs of running an efficient secretariat is especially key to build a strong NAB

As part of our series on financial sustainability, this NAB Dialogue will focus on how to raise core funding through two different approaches: membership fees and strategic partnerships with sponsors. Drawing from the experience of the German and Spain NABs, this session will allow you to:

  • Discover the pros and cons of the two approaches
  • Learn about key pitfalls and success factors
  • Understand the links between funding models, governance and community engagement

From mapping to market sizing: the NABs’ data journey, Thursday 29 September 2022, 2pm BST

Access to market data is crucial to inform NAB strategy and country roadmap, but also to support advocacy, market building and communication activities. Data on the impact ecosystem can not only be leveraged to demonstrate that impact investing is possible and desirable, but also provide clarity and enable informed decision making, for example by supporting investment decisions or policymaking.

To this end, more and more NABs have started collecting and analyzing market data to produce stakeholder mappings, landscape studies and market sizings.

However, these exercises can be complex, and the possibilities overwhelming: it is not always easy to know where to start, or what to do next!

This NAB Dialogue aims to help NABs and Task Forces learn from our community’s experience by:

  • Providing practical advice on how to decide when, how and what data to collect and analyse
  • Highlighting frequent pitfalls and success factors
  • Enabling NABs and Task Forces to share the challenges they face and crowdsource solutions from others
  • Mapping resources that have been developed within the GSG community.

What are the fundamentals of an Impact Investing Market Maturity Index (IIMX)?, Wednesday 6 July 2022, 1pm BST

While impact investing is experiencing fast and steady growth, providing an estimate of the maturity of a given impact investing ecosystem is crucial to inform market governance, inform policy marking and advocacy efforts, and act as a reference for investors willing to step into the impact economy.

To this end, the European Commission’s Joint Research Center (JRC), in partnership with Evolutiq impact, has been working on an Impact Investment Maturity Index (IIMX).

How to (& how not to!) build a successful deal-matching platform: Lessons from Impact Agora?, Thursday 23 June 2022, 1pm BST

Connecting the demand and the supply side is critical to grow any NAB’s impact investing market. Good opportunities struggle to find capital at the same time investors need a pipeline of high-quality investable projects.

Increasingly, NABs have recognised the potential to establish their own deal matching platform. However, setting up the technology and running the community presents many challenges.

Impact Agora has been on that journey over the last two years and could prove a useful platform to help NAB facilitate connections and capital flows within and beyond their communities.

The Task Force on Inequality-related Financial Disclosures (TIFD): a new inequality measurement framework, Wednesday 8 June 2022, 2pm BST

Consensus is building among investors that the “S” in ESG is not well understood. Meanwhile, inequality is growing, and stakeholders globally are recognising both its negative impacts on humanity, as well as its threat as a systemic risk to markets.

The Task Force on Inequality-related Financial Disclosures (TIFD) is launching to develop a systemic risk management framework that can reduce inequality created by the private sector.

A collaboration among a broad range of stakeholders, TIFD will provide guidance, thresholds, targets, and metrics for companies and investors to measure and manage their impacts on inequality, as well as inequality’s impacts on company and investor performance.

Join us for an interactive discussion that will help you understand:

  • TIFD’s vision and objectives and how it relates to existing efforts
  • Its relevance to NABs’ work
  • How NABs can get involved

NAB Dialogue: Moving faith-based investors into impact, Wednesday 2 March 2022, 1pm GMT

Faith-based values have been the cornerstone of our society. However, there is a new and unexpected role for Faith-based organizations (FBOs) as large asset owners to shift (part of) their investments into a responsible portfolio with a net positive social and environmental impact. In order to do that we will need to engage, support and educate them, as well as their fiduciary intermediaries. The Amsterdam based FIIND Impact Foundation has published grant funded research into the journey of Faith-Based investors into impact. Join this NAB Dialogue to discover how to support FBOs to invest into impact investing (e.g. align faith values with impact investing themes).

The Faith Impact Project is a grant funded project of the FIIND Impact Foundation coordinated by the GSG’s Dutch National Advisory Board.
